Staff Excellence Award for Excellence in Research 2012

In addition to her work in Teagasc Fiona has engaged with management and other members of staff in developing/updating strategies e.g. Teagasc Statement of strategy, Teagasc Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Strategy, Teagasc Staff Recognition Programme. Fiona is also a contact person for ‘Dignity at Work’.
Teagasc Dignity at Work
Teagasc is committed to protecting dignity and respect across the organisation.
The Dignity at Work policy aims to promote respect, dignity, safety and equality in the workplace. Any form of bullying, harassment or sexual harassment is not acceptable, and each member of staff has a duty to behave in an acceptable and respectful manner. If Staff have any questions or concerns in relation to interactions they are having at work that they feel maybe a Dignity at Work issue, they can seek information, advice and support from any of the designated ‘Contact Persons’.
Fiona is also a Liaison Officer for Oak Park Walsh Scholars
One of the long-established supports for Walsh Scholars (PhD students) at Teagasc is a network of Liaison Officers (previously called mentors) across our seven Research Centres.
Their role is defined as follows:
An independent and confidential point of contact for Walsh Scholars at their Research Centre who provide guidance in relation to potential difficulties that might arise in the PhD experience and supervisory process.”
Walsh Scholars are encouraged to get to know and take support from Liaison Officers, each of whom have a wealth of research experience and have a good understanding of research operations at their Centre.
Mental Health First Aider
In 2023 Fiona also qualified as Mental Health First Aider.

Photography
Fiona has won several awards for her ‘Hobby’ photography with many of her images being published in media.

Research and Innovation photo competition 2022
The winning image, showcasing the common native species Green-Orb Weavers at work in a rye field, was taken by Fiona Hutton, Teagasc, Plant Pathology. Green-Orb Weavers are extremely beneficial as a natural biocontrol in crops. https://www.agriland.ie/farming-news/teagasc-reveals-winners-in-research-and-innovation-photo-contest

Next Generation (runner up in the Research and Innovation photo competition 2022)
Cereal production is currently facing large yield losses due to the loss of pesticides and fungicides for control. Ongoing monitoring for pests and diseases is crucial. This image was captured whilst monitoring crops in Teagasc Oak Park. The common green shield bug has a bright green body with tiny brown ‘puncture marks’, and brown wing tips. Mating is back-to-back. Eggs are laid on the undersides of leaves and hatch into wingless nymphs in June/July, becoming adults by autumn. Green shield bugs are part of the natural diversity of woodlands, hedgerows and trees. ~ Fiona Hutton
